2010 was a good year for cycling – with skyrocketing fuel prices more and more people turned to bikes as a regualr mode of transport and of course the introducti0n of the London Cycle Scheme which has seen a huge number of people taking advantage of hiring a bike to get around the capital.
Increase of cycle accidents predicted for 2011
Sadly 2011 did not begin well – we were very sorry to learn of the death of ex-Boxer Gary Mason who became the first cycling fatality in London this year.
Dave Escandell, Team Leader of the Cycle Accident Claim Department at Access Legal from Shoosmiths, said: “There have been 53 bicycle accident fatalities on London’s roads in the past four years, and one so early in 2011 will raise further concerns, particularly as cyclist numbers expected to rise.
“Some commentators believe Transport for London’s high profile media campaigns may not be reaching the correct audience.
“Most cyclists are well aware of the dangers on our roads, and any prolonged safety campaigns have to have an element of education directed at motorists, too.”
